Answering Barechu Before Davening Minchah

*The Daily Halacha Moment - Answering Barechu Before Davening Minchah* 📙

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן ‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one answer Barechu on erev Shabbat if he hasn't prayed minchah yet?

Answer:

Once one answers to Barechu, [1] one may no longer pray Minchah. Therefore, if one hears a congregation reciting barechu on erev Shabbat, one should not answer with them. Once one has already answered barechu, he must recite the Amidah of Arvit twice in order to make-up for missing Minchah. [2]

Nonetheless, one who has accepted Shabbat early, may answer to the kedushah or berachot of Minchah that is being recited in a different minyan (this is very common at the Kotel where there are multiple minyanim). [3] However, he should preferably not be counted as part of the minyan for Minchah. [4]

[1]. Halachah Berurah, vol. 15, p. 430 states that this is also the case if one recited Mizmor Shir LeYom

HaShabbat or Boee Kallah with the tzibbur. However, if one is praying alone, and he recited Mizmor Shir or Boee Kallah, then he may still go back and recite Minchah.

[2]. Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 1, p. 295. See also in p. 296 that adds that even stipulating that one does not want to accept Shabbat through reciting barechu does not help. Levyat Chen §7, states that it is better if one stipulates that he does not want to accept Shabbat and then answer to barechu through thinking the words, and not enunciating the words.
