Avoiding The Melachah Of Borer

The Daily Halacha Moment - Avoiding The Melachah Of Borer 🍲

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

How does one avoid the melachah of Borer on Shabbat?

Answer:

One does not transgress the melachah of borer if three conditions are all met: [1]

a. One must separate the ochel (the edible item, or the wanted item, also known as the “good”) from the pesolet (the non-edible, or unwanted item, also referred to as the “bad”).[2]

b. One has intention to separate the item for immediate use.[3]

c. It must be separated by hand and not by using a utensil, since separating the good from the bad by hand is considered as a manner of regular consumption.[4]

A way to remember these rules is by the mnemonic "איל משולש":

א = אוכל, Food

י =יד, By hand

ל = לאלתר, immediately
