Bandages On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Bandages On Shabbat 🩹

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one use bandages on Shabbat?

Answer:

It is permissible to use non-medicated band-aids on Shabbat -- this

includes tearing open the wrapper, removing the stickers, and applying

the band-aid.[1] It is also permissible to remove a band-aid on Shabbat. However, it is preferable to wait until after Shabbat to take off a band-aid if one is certain that he will cause hairs to be pulled out in the process.[2]

Nonetheless, It is forbidden on Shabbat to apply an ointment to a bandage, and if such a bandage had been placed on a wound before Shabbat, it is forbidden to replace it if it fell off, or to put on a new one.[3] If, however, the bandage needs to be changed to prevent infection, one may prepare bandages with ointment before Shabbat and then replace his bandage on Shabbat as needed.[4] If it is a very deep cut, and one needs to put an ointment in order to prevent infection, one may place the ointment on the cut on Shabbat.[5]
