The Daily Halacha Moment - Candle Lighting On Shavuot 🕯
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
When does one recite the Berachah when lighting the Shavuot Candles?
Answer:
In every household, candle lights must be kindled in honor of the Yom Tov. Before kindling them recites the blessing:
ברוך אתה ה אלהינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו להדליק נר של יום טוב.
"May You, God our Master, King of the Universe, be blessed for having sanctified us through His commandments and for having commanded us to kindle lights for Yom Tov." [1]
Even though Ashkenazic women have the custom of reciting the blessing over the Shabbat Candles only after they have kindled them, they must recite the blessing before kindling Yom Tov candles. This is certainly the case for Sephardic Jews who follow the ruling of Maran HaShulchan Aruch and must recite the blessing before kindling either Shabbat or Yom Tov candles (as we've mentioned in a previous Halacha Moment when we were discussing the Halachot of Hadlakat Nerot).
