Coffee & Tea Before Kiddush

The Daily Halacha Moment - Tea, Coffee & Kiddush

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one drink coffee or tea before shacharit without reciting Kiddush on Shabbat?

Answer:

The Gemara, Berachot 10b states that one should not eat or drink before praying Shacharit, since one should not put his own wants before praying to Hashem. However, the Gemara does allow one to drink water. The Shulchan Aruch 89:3 therefore states that drinks such as coffee or tea that are similar to water may be drunk before Shacharit. In regards to drinking coffee before Shacharit, the Pri Chadash, Mishnah Berurah 89:22and the Chida, Birkei Yosef 89:2 write that one should refrain from putting milk and sugar into the coffee, since by adding milk and sugar one makes the coffee a more satiating type of drink. However, many poskim debate this point, and reason that this ruling was only true in the time of the Chida and the Mishnah Berurah (100 years ago and more), when it was not so common to drink coffee with sugar and milk since they were considered commodities. Today, however, sugar and milk are very easy to come by, and even more so, today most people and even very poor people will not even drink coffee without milk and sugar in it; therefore, they are no longer considered such a luxurious ingredient.

That being said, even though one has not yet recited Kiddush, one who needs a coffee or tea in the morning in order to be able to pray with a clear head, may drink coffee or tea before Shacharit. [1] Nonetheless, once one has prayed shacharit one may not drink anything until Kiddush is recited.

Similarly, even a person who did not recite Kiddush on Friday night, may drink coffee or tea before Shacharit. [2]
