Question:
May One Crush with two shinuyim On Shabbat?
Answer:
Even though in general it is not permitted to crush pepper or even salt that has not been previously crushed, if it is needed, one may crush it by applying two shinuyim: by crushing it with the blade of a knife and within a bowl or plate that is not normally used when crushing.[1] One may crush salt or pepper with one’s hands, since this is a highly unusual way of crushing them.[2]
