Cup Fit For Netilat Yadayim

The Daily Halacha Moment - Cup Fit For Netilat Yadayim 🥤

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What type of cup is fit for netilat yadayim?

Answer:

A cup used for Netilat Yadayim must meet the following halachic requirements to be considered fit:

1. Material:

The cup can be made from any material, such as metal, glass, plastic, wood, or ceramic. [1] Disposable cups are also acceptable as long as they meet the other requirements and are sturdy enough to hold water. [2]

2. Capacity:

The cup must be able to hold at least a revi'it of water, which is the minimum halachic measurement for Netilat Yadayim.[3] This is about 3-5 fluid ounces, depending on the opinion followed.

3. Intact and Usable:

The cup must not have holes, cracks, or damage that would prevent it from holding water. If water leaks out of the cup, it is disqualified for use. [4]

4. Shape:

The cup must have a defined structure that can contain and hold water. It should not be flat or formless in a way that the water would spill out.[5]

5. Designated Use:

While not strictly required, it is praiseworthy to designate a specific cup for Netilat Yadayim as a sign of respect for the mitzvah. [6]

By fulfilling these conditions, any cup regardless of material can be used for Netilat Yadayim.
