Customs Of The Haftara

The Daily Halacha Moment - Customs Of The Haftara 📜

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן ‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What are some customs regarding the Haftara?

Answer:

One should recite the berachot of the Haftarah immediately after the end berachot of the Aliyah of Maftir are recited and the sefer Torah is closed (or wrapped).[1] It is praiseworthy to read the haftarah out of a handwritten parchment, even if the parchment is not a complete Navi. However, if there is no handwritten parchment available, then one should preferably read the haftarah out of a full printed book of Navi. If there is no full sefer of Navi available, then one can read the haftarah even out of the haftarah printed in the Chumash.[2]

Preferably, the one who recites the berachot on the haftarah should be the one who recites the Haftarah as well. However, if the person is not familiar with the words, then someone else may recite the Hafatrah out loud, while he follows along quietly.[3]

One should not answer “amen” to the end of the first berachot of the haftarah.[4]

The rest of the minyan should read along quietly with the Baal Koreh.[5]

Similarly, If one started the haftarah with a minyan, and then some people left the room in the middle, the haftarah may be finished and one may recite the berachot afterward, even though there are not ten people present.[6]
