The Daily Halacha Moment - Defending oneself in order to prevent harm on Shabbat
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
May one break Shabbat to defend oneself from being harmed?
May one call the police if he sees a suspicious package on the street?
Answer:
If one’s home is being robbed, and one is afraid of a resulting life-threatening situation, one may call the police or perform a melachah in order to neutralize the thieves. [1]
Similarly, If one sees a suspicious package in the street and suspects that it may contain an explosive, he may contact the police even on Shabbat to have them inspect and dispose of the package. [2]
