The Daily Halacha Moment - Different Quality Foods & Borer 🍲
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
Are different quality foods subject to the Melachah of Borer?
Answer:
Items of the same species but significantly different quality can constitute a mixture.[1] Examples include fresh and spoiled fruits or cooked and burnt foods.[2] For instance, when one has a grape cluster that has some spoiled and some fresh grapes, one may not pick out the spoiled grapes. If one only picked out the spoiled grapes, and the grapes were partially edible, then one only transgresses a rabbinical prohibition. Rather, one may only pick out the fresh grapes from the cluster and leave the spoiled ones behind.[3]
