The Daily Halacha Moment - Earliest Time For Birkot Hashachar
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
When is the earliest one can recite birkot hashachar?
Answer:
The earliest time to recite Birchot HaShachar is from Chatzot (midnight)[1], except for the blessing "HaNoten Lasechvi Binah," which should not be recited until Olot (dawn). [2] If someone slept during the day and remained asleep well after nightfall, they may recite Birchot HaShachar at Chatzot, even if they plan to return to sleep. However, Elokai Neshama and HaMaavir Sheina should only be recited once they rise and no longer intend to return to sleep. If one forgot to recite Birchot HaShachar before davening, they may recite them afterward, except for Birchot HaTorah and Elokai Neshama, due to some debate.[3] If one wakes up before Olot HaShachar and plans to return to sleep afterward, they may recite Birchot HaShachar, except for Elokai Neshama and HaMaavir Sheina, which should be said without Shem U'Malchut. [4] In the morning, Elokai Neshama and HaMaavir Sheina should be recited with Shem U'Malchut. However, if one had slept the previous day, some authorities suggest that these blessings may be recited with Shem U'Malchut even the first time.[5] If one fears they might forget that they have already recited the blessings during the night, it is recommended to wait and recite them after rising for the day.
