The Daily Halacha Moment - Eating Before Davening ☕️

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one eat or drink before Davening?

Answer:

There is a discussion in the Gemara (Berachot 10b) regarding the prohibition of eating before reciting the morning prayer, Shacharit. This halacha is derived from the verse in the Torah, "Do not eat on the blood" (Vayikra 19:26), which Chazal interpret to mean that one should not eat before praying for their own life, as prayer is essential for sustenance and well-being. The underlying reason for this prohibition is that eating before davening demonstrates a sense of arrogance, as it implies that a person prioritizes their physical needs over their spiritual connection to Hashem. However, not all forms of consumption are considered indulgent; drinking water, for example, is permitted because it is not viewed as an act of self-indulgence. This distinction is codified in the Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 89:3), which allows for the drinking of water before Shacharit but upholds the prohibition against eating food beforehand.

So what about drinking coffee or tea?

Answer:

Flavored coffees and teas should be avoided. However, regular tea and coffee is permitted.

Many Sepharadic and Ashkenazic poskim allow one to drink tea or coffee with milk and sugar before Shacharit provided that one says Birkat Hatorah and Keriat Shemah, and one should make sure not to stand around with friends talking and risk missing Zman Teffilah. It would also stand to reason that drinks that are not so commonly drunk will not be allowed before Shacharit, such as a latte which is made almost entirely of milk.
