Extracting a Tooth On Shabbat 🦷

The Daily Halacha Moment - Extracting a Tooth On Shabbat 🦷

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one have his tooth extracted on Shabbat if he's in pain?

Answer:

One who is having an intense toothache on Shabbat and needs to have the tooth extracted, may have the tooth removed by a non-Jewish doctor.[1] However, if one is experiencing intense pain, and it is not being solved by taking painkillers, such as in the case of an abscess (a puss filled infection) that causes severe swelling, it is considered a life-threatening illness and may even be taken care of by a Jewish doctor, and one should even violate Shabbat in order to get proper and immediate treatment.[2]
