The Daily Halacha Moment - Forgot Atah Chonantanu 📙

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן

‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What should one do if one forgot Atah Chonantanu?

Answer:

One who forgot to recite Atah Chonantanu, should do as follows:[1]

a. If one remembers before reciting the Name of Hashem in the berachah of Chonen Hada’at, then he should go back to “Atah Chonantanu.”

b. If one has already reciting Hashem’s Name, then he should continue with his Amidah, and should not go back to fix his mistake.

c. One should not recite Atah Chonantanu in Shema Kolenu if one forgot to say it in the berachah of Atah Chonen. Rather, one should rely on the Havdallah that one will recite on a cup of wine later on.[2]

One who forgot to recite Atah Chonantanu in Arvit, and does not have any way of attaining wine for Havdallah, then he must repeat the Amidah of Arvit again, and add the paragraph of Atah Chonantanu in its proper place. However, if one thinks that he will be able to attain wine (or chamar medinah) on Sunday, then one should not go back and repeat the Amidah. If one is unsure, then he should repeat the Amidah again, but stipulate that his Amidah should be a nedavah if he is indeed able to attain wine later that night or on Sunday.[3]

Similarly, one who forgot Atah Chonantanu, and then did melachah before reciting Havdalah, must go back and recite the Amidah again. However, if one recited the phrase, “Baruch HaMavdil ben Kodesh LeChol,” then one may do melachah and one does not have to go back and recite the Amidah again, and instead should rely on the Havdalah that will be recited later on the cup of wine.
