The Daily Halacha Moment - Giving Someone Food Who Won't Recite A Berachah

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

Is it assur to give someone food if you know they will not make a berachah?

Answer:

The Shulchan Aruch states that one should not give food to someone who will not recite a berachah, as this enables them to eat without fulfilling the obligation of making a blessing beforehand. However, there are different approaches to handling this situation, depending on the circumstances and the individual involved.

One option (A) is to politely and respectfully educate them about the importance of a berachah, explaining its meaning and significance. If they are unfamiliar with the correct way to recite a berachah, one can kindly guide them, including the practice of covering their head with a kippah when saying it. Another approach (B) is to recite the berachah oneself while eating one’s own food and encourage them to cover their heads and answer “Amen.” This allows them to participate in the mitzvah without feeling pressured.

However, in situations where addressing the issue might lead to insulting the person, creating discomfort, or causing an argument (C), it is preferable not to say anything and instead rely on the opinions that permit serving them food even if they will not make a berachah. Maintaining good relationships and avoiding unnecessary conflict is also a Torah value, and one should always strive to approach the matter with sensitivity and normalcy, ensuring that the person does not feel embarrassed or unwelcome. Additionally, by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the person may eventually feel inspired and develop a desire to come closer to Hashem on their own.
