The Daily Halacha Moment - Hamotzi On Sweet Bread? 🍞
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What is the berachah on bread which is sweet?
May one recite HaMotzi on bread that is sweet?
Answer:
According to Sephardic custom, bread that is baked with sugar or other sweet ingredients and has a noticeable sweetness is classified as "Pat HaBa’ah B’Kisnin." As a result, the appropriate berachah before eating it is "Borei Minei Mezonot", and the after-berachah is "Al Hamichya."
Since this type of bread is not considered regular bread, one does not fulfill the obligation of Seudat Shabbat (the required Shabbat meal) with it, unless a substantial amount—the equivalent of four eggs’ volume (approximately 216 grams)—is consumed. This quantity is considered a set meal (keviut seudah), thereby elevating the status of the bread to that of regular bread. In such a case, one must wash hands (Netilat Yadayim) with a berachah, recite "HaMotzi" before eating, and say "Birkat HaMazon" afterward. [1]
In contrast, according to Ashkenazic custom, sweet bread is generally treated as regular bread from the outset. Therefore, the berachah before eating it is always "HaMotzi,"* and the after-berachah is "Birkat HaMazon," regardless of the amount consumed. [2]
