The Daily Halacha Moment - The Obligation Of Berachah Achrona On Foods 🍲

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

How much does one need to eat in order to recite a Berachah Achrona (after blessings)?

Answer:

One is only obligated to recite a Berachah Achrona (a concluding blessing) on food if they consume a minimum amount known as a Kezayit. The term Kezayit literally means "like an olive" and is generally estimated to be around 27 grams according to Sephardic custom. However, it is not enough to simply eat this amount; it must be consumed within a specific time frame known as Kedi Achilat Pras, which refers to the maximum amount of time allowed for eating in order for it to be considered a single act of consumption rather than a prolonged, separate eating session. [1]

How Long is Kedi Achilat Pras?

The precise length of Kedi Achilat Pras is a matter of discussion among halachic authorities. According to Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef Zatzal, Kedi Achilat Pras is defined as 7.5 minutes. This means that in order to be obligated to recite a Berachah Achrona, a person must consume a Kezayit of food within this time frame. [2]

For Ashkenazim, however, the halachic authorities generally rule more stringently. According to the majority of Ashkenazic poskim, Kedi Achilat Pras is a shorter time period—approximately 4 minutes. Therefore, an Ashkenazi individual must ensure that they consume a Kezayit of food within 4 minutes in order to be obligated to say a Berachah Achrona.[3]
