The Daily Halacha Moment - Forgot To Recite Berachah 🗣️
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
If one who accidentally ate or drank something without reciting a berachah first, what does one do if one has not yet swallowed?
Answer:
It sometimes happens that a person begins eating or drinking and then realizes they forgot to recite the required berachah. What should one do in such a situation? The answer depends on whether the food or drink has already been swallowed.
If One Took a Sip Without a Berachah
If someone took a sip of a drink and only then realized that they had not yet recited a berachah, the ruling differs based on one’s custom:
Sephardic Opinion: If the person has already placed the liquid in their mouth but has not yet swallowed, they may swallow it and do not need to spit it out. However, before taking another sip, they must recite the appropriate berachah. [1]
Ashkenazic Opinion: Ashkenazim follow a stricter approach and hold that if there is more to drink, one should spit out the first sip and then recite a berachah before taking another. This is to ensure that the berachah is recited before consumption, as ideally required. [2]
If One Took a Bite Without a Berachah
If someone placed food in their mouth without reciting a berachah, but has not yet swallowed, the proper course of action depends on the nature of the food:
If the food is difficult or inappropriate to spit out (such as something messy or unpleasant to remove from the mouth), the person should push the food to the side of their mouth and recite the berachah before swallowing.
However, if the food is something that can be removed without issue—such as a dry item that is not considered disgusting to spit out—then it is preferable to spit it out first, recite the berachah, and then eat it properly. [3]
A General Rule About Reciting a Berachah:
It is important to emphasize that one should never deliberately place food or drink in their mouth and then attempt to recite a berachah while it is still there. This is improper, as the verse states: "One’s mouth should be full of Your praises" (Tehillim 71:8). A berachah should always be recited with a clean mouth, free of food or drink, to properly express gratitude and recognition of Hashem’s blessings.
