Late To Shul Shabbat Morning

The Daily Halacha Moment - Arriving Late To Shul Shabbat Morning 📙

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן ‎העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

I came late to shul on Shabbat morning what should be the order of my prayer? What can I skip?

Answer:

One who arrives late on Shabbat and needs to skip in order to be able to recite the Amidah

with the minyan should do as follows[1]:

a. If one has not yet recited the Tehillim that is recited on Shabbat before Baruch She’amar, then one may skip the Tehillim in order to have enough time to be able to recite Nishmat.

b. If one only has time to recite either Pesukei DeZimra or Nishmat, then one should skip

Nishmat since it is only a custom, as opposed to Pesukei DeZimra which is an obligation, and is more commonly read as part of teffilah. After one has finished praying, one should recite Nishmat that was skipped.

c. If one has already recited the Pesukei DeZimra until the words “Leshem Tifartecha” in the paragraph of Vayevarech David, then one can skip from there until after the paragraph of Az Yashir, and continue with Nishmat.

Similarly, if one has not yet recited the beginning of the berachah of Yishtabach (i.e. the words Baruch Atah Adona-i and onward) and realizes that he skipped Nishmat, then he one may go back and recite Nishmat. However, if one has already recited the berachah, then one may no longer go back and recite Nishmat. Instead, one should recite it at the end of Teffilah. [2]
