Question:
May one make tahini on Shabbat?
Answer:
When making tahini with a tahini paste, the paste generally thickens as one is adding liquids to it and this can pose a problem on Shabbat. There are several ways to make tahini on Shabbat:[1]
a. One can pour a lot of water at once and make the tahini very runny. This is permitted without any use of a shinuy, since it is being made thinner, and never has the chance to thicken.[2]
b. One should first put in the water and then add the tahini paste and mix it by shaking the container or mixing it with some other shinuy. This allows one to make a thicker tahini than the previous option.
c. Some poskim permit mixing the tahini slowly with water until it thickens, and then adding as needed in order to thin out the mixture. However, one should not rely upon this without also using a shinuy with the way one mixes and preferably also use a shinuy in the order of making it. It should only be prepared immediately before the meal.[3]
d. If one wants to thicken the tahini by adding more raw paste, one may only do so if one uses a shinuy. [4]
