The Daily Halacha Moment - Modeh Ani 🕍
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What is Modeh Ani?
Answer:
Modeh Ani is a short and meaningful teffilah recited immediately upon waking up in the morning. It expresses gratitude to Hashem for restoring one’s soul and granting a new day of life. [1]
The text of Modeh Ani is as follows:
"מוֹדֶה אֲנִי לְפָנֶֽיךָ, מֶֽלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם, שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְחֶמְלָה, רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ".
"Modeh ani lefanecha, melech chai v'kayam, shehechezarta bi nishmati BeChemla, Rabba emunatecha" [2] with a pause between BeChemlah and Rabba. Women should say "Modah Ani" (the feminine form of the prayer). [3]
Translation:
"I give thanks before You, living and eternal King, for You have returned my soul within me with compassion; abundant is Your faithfulness."
One can say Modeh Ani even before washing one's hands. [4]
For men, it is preferable to cover their heads with a kippah or a blanket while saying Modeh Ani. [5] Furthermore, children should be taught to say Modeh Ani as soon as they begin to speak, along with the first pasuk of Shema and *"Torah tziva lanu Moshe" (Devarim 33:4).[6]
Little Chizuk:
From the words of Modeh Ani, we see that Hashem believes in us and has granted us the gift of a new day. The prayer concludes with the phrase:
"רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ" – "Rabah Emunatech"
"Abundant is Your faithfulness"
This phrase reflects Hashem's deep belief in us. Just as we express our gratitude for having our neshama returned, Hashem's faithfulness in giving us another day of life demonstrates His trust that we have the potential to fulfill our purpose. Each morning, Hashem restores our soul with compassion (*בְּחֶמְלָה*)—a sign that He sees value in us, believes we can achieve good, and grants us the opportunity to try again.
By waking us up, Hashem shows that He has confidence in us to use this extra day for growth, purpose, and positivity. Modeh Ani reminds us that each new day is not just a gift, but also a message: Hashem believes in us and gives us another chance to fulfill our potential.
