Moving A Fan or Alarm Clock On Shabbat

The Daily Halacha Moment - Moving A Fan or Alarm Clock On Shabbat 🕒

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one move a fan on Shabbat?

May one move an alarm clock on Shabbat?

Answer:

An electric fan is considered a kli she’melachto le’issur and may be moved for a permitted purpose. This includes turning it in the direction that one needs so as to get more of a breeze, or away if one is getting too much of a breeze. One may also lift or press down on the peg that makes the fan turn or stop turning, provided that one does not press any electric buttons. [1]

Similarly, if an electric alarm clock is ringing on Shabbat and the noise is disturbing other people, the clock may be moved to a different room where it will not disturb anyone. [2]

Yalkut Yosef, Shabbat, vol. 2, p. 423 points out that before moving the fan, one should ensure that it is firmly plugged in so that by moving one will not accidentally pull out the plug. It is also praiseworthy to cover the buttons or leave a note as a reminder that one should not touch the buttons that increase or decrease the speed of the fan.
