Netilat Yadayim When Waking Up in the Middle of the Night

The Daily Halacha Moment - Netilat Yadayim When Waking Up In the Middle Of The Night 💤

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

I woke up in the middle of the night and want to drink, do I have to do netilat yadayim?

Answer:

If a person wakes up in the middle of the night and intends to get up for a while before returning to sleep, he should wash his hands without a beracha. Then, when he wakes up the second time to begin his day, he should wash his hands again with a beracha.[1]

If one wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to take a drink, it is preferable to wash one’s hands first. However, if this is too difficult, one may simply wipe their hands on a blanket or clothing and then recite the beracha on the drink before drinking. [2]

[1]. Piskei Teshuvot 1:6 states that it is preferable to wash one’s hands upon waking the first time; however, one should not recite a beracha at that point, as one is not yet ready to daven, in accordance with the Biur Halacha 4:1 s.v. Afilu. See also Halichot Shlomo, Tefillah p. 170; Yalkut Yosef 4:25.
