The Daily Halacha Moment - Nice Clothing For Shabbat 👔🧥
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What is the importance of dressing well on Shabbat?
Answer:
One should do his best to dress in clean and proper clothing in honor of Shabbat [1] and in order to have a constant reminder that it is Shabbat. [2] It is especially praiseworthy to have clothing which are set aside for Shabbat and not used during the rest of the week. [3]
Women should also have clothing specifically meant for Shabbat. [4]
One should be dressed in his Shabbat clothing already before Shabbat begins. [5] When dressing one should state that one is dressing up for the honor of Shabbat. [6]
Even if one is alone for Shabbat, he should change into Shabbat clothing, since one is dressing for the honor of the Shabbat and not because of people who may see him. [7]
Similarly, it is praiseworthy to even have pajamas that one only uses on Shabbat. [8]

[1]. Some poskim state that this is even a biblical obligation. However, most poskim state that this is a rabbinical obligation. See in Shulchan Aruch HaRav 242:1 and in Ben Yehoyada, Shabbat 114a. The Yalkut Reuveni, Bereshit p. 50 and in Kaf HaChaim 260:24 state that the way one dresses for the Shabbat in this world is the way in which Hashem will dress him in the World to Come. [3]. Shulchan Aruch 262:2-3; Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 1, p. 26. According to Kabbalah, all of one’s clothing should be different. This custom is also brought in the Moreh BaEtzbah §139; Chessed LaAlafim 262:3 and in Pele Yoetz, Erech Levishah; Maaseh Rav §147. However, Halachah Berurah, vol. 15, p. 124 states that the custom today among many even religious Jews is to specifically wear a different suit in honor of Shabbat, even though the rest of one’s clothing is not always worn specifically on Shabbat, provided that all of one’s clothing has been washed and are clean. In any case, it is nevertheless praiseworthy to have clothing specifically set aside for Shabbat.
