Order Of Shoes In Halacha

The Daily Halacha Moment - Putting On Shoes

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

I heard that one should first put on one's right shoe, is this true?

And why?

Answer:

One should first put on the right shoe before putting on the left shoe. [1]After both shoes are on, the shoelaces should be tied in a specific order: the laces of the left shoe should be tied before the laces of the right shoe. [2] The Mishnah Berurah writes that a lefty should put on his right shoe first and also tie his right shoe first. [3]

The Gemara explains that this custom is based on the significance of the right side in many Jewish customs and practices, symbolizing strength and priority. The left side is given precedence in tying shoelaces because tefillin is traditionally worn on the left arm, and the tying of shoelaces is seen as analogous to the wrapping of the tefillin straps. Thus, this practice balances the importance given to both the right and left sides. [See footnote 4 for other reasons]

There are other reasons on a deeper level why we have this custom. 1. *Kabbalistic Interpretation: Kabbalistic teachings suggest that the right side represents kindness and the left side represents judgment. By giving precedence to the right when putting on shoes, and to the left when tying them, one symbolically balances these two attributes. 2. Symbolism in Daily Actions: This practice emphasizes mindfulness in daily activities, reminding individuals to infuse even mundane tasks with spiritual intention. By following this sequence, one aligns their actions with deeper spiritual meanings.
