Preparing For The Seder

The Daily Halacha Moment - Preparing For The Seder 🍴

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

How should someone prepare for the seder?

Answer:

One’s table should be set early in the day so that one may arrive home and recite Kiddush immediately after tzet hakochavim.[1]

One does not have to wait until the tzet hakochavim of Rabbenu Tam to recite Kiddush.

[2] In extenuating circumstances, one may even recite Kiddush after shkiyah, provided that one has prayed and accepted Yom Tov. Even in such a case, one may only begin the Seder after tzet hakochavim. [3]

Both men and women are obligated to drink the four cups of wine.

There is even a mitzvah to give wine to children if they can understand the mitzvah of reading the Haggadah and sipuryetziat Mitzrayim. There is also a custom to distribute candies and nuts to the children before the Seder so that they will not fall asleep. [4]

Furthermore, one should ensure that his children are well rested so that they will be awake for the Seder, and thus enable one to fulfill the mitzvah of telling the story of yetziat

Mitzrayim. [5]

One’s table should be set with his best dishes and silverware to create a feeling of freedom. Furthermore, one should set his table and seating in a way that he will be able to lean on his left side. [6]
