The Daily Halacha Moment - Proper Way To Answer Amen
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What is the proper way to answer Amen?
I heard two berachot, what do I answer?
Answer:
The meaning and intention behind saying "Amen" vary depending on the type of beracha. When responding to Birchot HaMitzvah (blessings for a mitzvah) or Birchot HaNehenin( blessings recited before deriving physical pleasure or benefit from something), one’s intention should be to affirm the truth of the beracha and to express belief in its content. For Birchot HaShevach (blessings of praise), the intention should be to affirm the truth of the praise being offered to Hashem. When responding "Amen" to prayers, however, it should be with the intent of requesting and hoping that Hashem fulfills the prayer. [1] Similarly, One should not respond "Amen" louder than the beracha itself, unless the intention is to inspire or encourage others to answer "Amen" as well. [2] One should not say Amen twice in a row. [3] If one hears two berachot, they should respond with "Amen VeAmen" rather than "Amen Amen."[4]
