Question:
Where does "Mishenichnas Adar Marbim Be Simcha" come from?
Are there any segulot for Rosh Chodesh Adar?
Answer:
Chodesh Tov Umevorach! Excellent question.
The Gemara in Masechet Ta’anit (29a) qoutes Rabbi Yehuda, son of Rav Shmuel ben Shilat, who said in the name of Rav: "Just as the beginning of the month of Av marks a time when our joy and happiness are diminished, the beginning of Adar brings with it an increase in our joy and happiness." This statement draws a direct contrast between the two months, highlighting how the Jewish nation’s collective mood shifts with the changing of these months.
Further elaborating on this idea, Rav Papa advises that if a Jew has a court case with a gentile pending, they should avoid scheduling it in the month of Av, as it is a time when the Jewish nation’s fortune is believed to be low. Instead, Rav Papa recommends that the case be scheduled during Adar, when the Jewish nation’s luck and fortune are at their peak, increasing the likelihood of a favorable outcome.
The source for this is found in Megillat Esther (9:22), which states, “And the month which was switched for them from tragedy to joy.” This verse illustrates how the month of Adar was transformed from a time of tragedy into a time of joy and salvation for the Jewish people. Thus, the month of Adar symbolizes a period of divine favor, where good things come to Klal Yisrael, and its fortunes are markedly improved.
As a result of this association with success, Adar is considered an especially auspicious time for favorable outcomes, particularly in legal matters. Therefore, if someone is facing a court case with a gentile, it is seen as more beneficial to have the case take place during Adar, as the chances of success are believed to be significantly higher due to the positive and blessed nature of the month.
