Thick Mixtures & Lash

The Daily Halacha Moment - Thick Mixtures & Lash

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

Does mixing thick mixtures constitute to the Melachah of Lash?

Answer:

When using matzo-meal, it is permitted to add water or some other liquid to it with the following conditions: If it is a thick mixture then one may only make a small amount that is needed for one’s meal and only for immediate use. If the mixture is watery then one may even make a lot of it, but it may only be done by changing the method in which one makes the mixture, such as by placing the dry ingredients first and then by adding the wet ingredients, as opposed to doing vice versa, if this is not the normal way of doing so on a weekday.[1] One may make an egg salad on Shabbat by mashing onions, oil, and eggs together. Similarly, one may also make mashed liver with onions, even though both of these mixtures will become one mass. However, one may only prepare it immediately before his meal and one should not prepare more than one needs for that meal.[2] Similarly, it is permitted to place mayonnaise or salad dressing on a salad, even if the salad consists of finely chopped vegetables or of potato chunks. Chazon Ovadia, Shabbat, vol. 4, p. 282 explains that this is permitted in accordance with the ruling of Shulchan Aruch 321:15-16 who states that it is permitted to add honey to crushed mustard on Shabbat and mix it together, even though the Shulchan Aruch brings another opin[1]ion that does not allow one to do this, the halachah follows the first opinion who is lenient. Furthermore, in the case of chopped vegetables, Lash does not apply to a mixture where the item that the mayonnaise is being added to is not fine like powder.
