Question:
May one touch food before one performs Netilat Yadayim in the morning?
Answer:
The Gemara (Chullin 107b) states that one must perform Netilat Yadayim in the morning before one touches any food.
One must make sure not to touch any food or beverages before performing Netilat Yadayim in the morning, so that one doesn't contaminate the food or beverage with the harmful forces resting on one's hands. For this reason, it is imperative to make sure that one's little children perform Netilat Yadayim upon awakening in the morning before they touch any food or beverage. [1]
If one touched fruits or vegetables before performing Netilat Yadayim in the morning, the food should be rinsed with water three times and then according to all poskim they are permitted to be eaten. If one touched Food that would be ruined if it was rinsed with water, such as bread, it is permissible to eat the food without washing. The same applies to beverages that were touched by someone who hasn't performed the morning Netilat Yadayim. This applies whether an adult or a child touched it. Nonetheless, when there is no hefty loss involved, those who are stringent and avoid eating the food or drinking the beverage will receive a special blessing from heaven. [2]
