The Daily Halacha Moment - Treating Someone Who Put Himself In Danger On Shabbat
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
Can we treat someone who made himself sick, on Shabbat?
Answer:
One who caused himself to become ill to the point which he is considered a choleh she’ein bo sakanah (a non life threatening sick person), such as if he ate something that he knew would make him sick, may accept treatment as a regular choleh she’ein bo sakanah. [1] Similarly, a person who has severe asthma may nevertheless attend synagogue even though he will have to use medication or an inhaler once he arrives. Such a person should not pray alone at home to prevent himself from having to use medication.[2]
