The Daily Halacha Moment - Using Juices That Seeped Out Of A Fruit On Shabbat

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

May one use juices that seeped out of a fruit on Shabbat?

Answer:

It is rabbinically forbidden to use or consume juices that seeped out of grapes or olives on Shabbat until after Shabbat. This restriction was necessary to prevent confusion that could ultimately lead one to squeeze grapes or olives outright. If juice seeped out of other types of fruits (other than grapes or olives), the juice is only forbidden if the person intended to squeeze the juice from that fruit. However, if one had intention to eat the fruit and not squeeze it, the juice that seeped out may be used. [1]

Similarly, one may cut up a fruit (other than grapes or olives) that is normally squeezed, such as an orange, even though some juice will be squeezed out in the process. After one eats the fruit, he may drink the left-over juice if he then decides to do so. [2]
