The Daily Halacha Moment - Thunder & Lighting⚡
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What berachah does one recite upon hearing thunder & seeing lighting?
What does one do if one hears the thunder and sees the lighting at the same time?
How many times a day may one recite these Berachot?
Answer:
The berachah recited upon hearing thunder is "Shekocho u’Gvuroto Maleh Olam," which praises Hashem’s strength and power that fills the world. The berachah recited upon seeing lightning is "Oseh Maaseh Bereshit," acknowledging Hashem as the Creator who continuously renews the natural world.
If one sees lightning and hears thunder simultaneously, only one berachah should be recited, which is "Oseh Maaseh Bereshit." However, if one only sees lightning without hearing thunder, then the berachah of "Oseh Maaseh Bereshit" should be said. If one only hears thunder without seeing lightning, then the appropriate berachah is "Shekocho u’Gvuroto Maleh Olam." Each berachah is meant to reflect the unique aspect of Hashem’s control over nature—thunder demonstrating His might and lightning showcasing His creation. [1]
These berachot should not be repeated multiple times during a single storm. They are only recited once per storm unless the weather conditions clearly indicate a new storm. For example, if it was raining, and one went to sleep and then woke up to find it still raining, the berachot should not be repeated. However, if the sky had completely cleared and later another storm arrived with new thunder and lightning, one would be permitted to recite the berachot again. [2]
