The Daily Halacha Moment - What Is AMEN?

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

What exactly is "Amen" and why do we say it after a blessing?

Answer:

Chazal (our Rabbis) instituted that whenever a person hears a beracha, they should respond with "Amen" as an expression of agreement and affirmation of the blessing. Chazal view the recitation of "Amen" in extremely high regard, even stating that answering "Amen" carries greater significance than reciting the beracha itself. Neglecting to say "Amen" is considered a serious transgression, while responding with deep concentration is described as a merit so great that it opens the gates of Gan Eden. [1] The word "Amen" shares its root letters with the Hebrew word Emunah, which means belief, faith, or trust. By responding "Amen" to a bracha, one is essentially declaring, "I believe in the truth of the blessing I have just heard, and I affirm its validity." It is not merely a passive response but an active expression of faith in God and an acknowledgment of His role in the blessing.

Furthermore, when saying "Amen," it is ideal to focus on the beginning of the bracha, specifically the words "Baruch Atta Hashem," which proclaim that God’s name is Blessed. This mindfulness connects the response of "Amen" back to the essence of the blessing, reinforcing the recognition of God as the source of all blessings. [2]

In future Halacha Moments, we will discuss more Halachot with regards to Amen.
