The Daily Halacha Moment - Cup Fit For Kiddush🍷
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
What type of cup may one use for Kiddush?
Answer:
One should beautify the mitzvah of Kiddush by using a beautiful cup. [1] That being said, many have the custom to use a silver or gold cup. [2]
A plastic disposable cup is permitted to be used for Kiddush but since we want to beautify the mitzvah one should preferably use a nice cup. [3] Some poskim say one shouldn't use a plastic disposal cup for Kiddush. [4]
The cup used for Kiddush should be intact, without any cracks or holes. The rim of the cup may not contain any chips or cracks. If the base of the cup is slightly broken, the cup should not be used for Kiddush even if the base can still support the cup and the cup is otherwise undamaged. [5]
Similarly, the Kiddush cup must be large enough to contain the volume of at least a Revi'it of wine. If the cup cannot hold a Revi'it, the Kiddush recited over it is not valid. [6]
There are many different opinions as to how much is the volume of a Revi'it. According to Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef Zatzal a Revi'it is around 2.8 FL Oz. [7]
According to HaGaon Rav Moshe Feinstein zt"l the amount of wine necessary for the Friday night Kiddush is 4.42 FL Oz. [8]
Furthermore, the Kiddush cup must be rinsed well both inside and out to ensure that it is perfectly clean. [9]
