The Daily Halacha Moment - Who's Obligated In Netilat Yadayim 👐🏻🚻

״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)

“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)

Question:

Who is obligated in Netilat Yadayim in the morning?

Are children obligated in Netilat Yadayim?

Answer:

Women are equally obligated as men to wash Netilat Yadayim in the morning. This obligation applies to all, as the reasons for washing, such as spiritual purity and preparation for tefillah are relevant to both men and women alike. Therefore, women should ensure they fulfill this practice with the same care and diligence as men. [1] The Kaf HaChaim notes that women may, in fact, have an even greater obligation to wash Netilat Yadayim because they play a central role in maintaining the purity of their homes. As those primarily responsible for preparing food and feeding their children, women directly influence the spiritual atmosphere of the household.

Children who have reached the age of chinuch (around 5-6) should be taught to wash their hands upon waking in the morning, and they should be careful not to touch food before doing so. [2] However, the Rabbis clarify that there is no formal obligation for a child to wash Netilat Yadayim before reaching this age. Still, it is beneficial to encourage younger children to begin washing their hands to instill good habits early on. This should be done in a gentle and positive manner, without applying pressure, as there is no issue if they touch food at this stage. [3] Furthermore, Many have the custom of washing their babies' hands from birth.
