The Daily Halacha Moment - Working Before Prayer
״כל השונה הלכות בכל יום - מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא״ (נידה עג ע״א, מגילה כח:)
“Anyone who studies Halachot every day is guaranteed that he is destined for the world-to-come” (Megilla 28b, Niddah 73a)
Question:
May one work before praying?
Answer:
The Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 89:3) emphasizes that one should not engage in personal affairs, business, or work before fulfilling the obligation of prayer, ensuring that prayer remains the first and foremost activity, demonstrating devotion and reliance on Hashem. This order of priorities reinforces the idea that one's relationship with Hashem takes precedence over worldly concerns.
Therefore, it is forbidden to engage in work after Olot HaShachar (dawn) until one has prayed. From half an hour before Olot HaShachar, it is preferable to recite Birchot HaShachar before beginning any work. [1] However, work for a mitzvah is permissible. [2] Furthermore, if one starts working before Olot HaShachar, it is permissible to continue after it. [3]
